Jērcēni — a parish between forests and meadows
Jērcēni parish isn't trying to prove anything. It's a quiet corner of northern Vidzeme, where ancient trees, bogs, and manor parks are as ordinary as morning coffee. If you're staying the night at Ausmas and the morning isn't rushing you, it's worth a look around.
A parish with history
Jērcēni parish was established in 1894 by merging three manor parishes — its centre has been Jaunjērcēni ever since. Neighbouring Strenči was once known for its rafting traditions, and the Gauja's rapids there still host a spring rafters' festival every year.
In the Northern Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve
Jērcēni parish lies between forests and meadows, almost entirely within the Northern Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve. The Gauja, with its old-growth pine forests, is about 10 km away — roughly a 15-minute drive — and makes for a good day walk. Closer to the house, Sedas bog offers its own quiet, with trails and birdwatching towers.
Two giants and a park
- The Kaņepju oak — with a 9.4 m girth, the second-thickest oak in Latvia and the whole Baltics.
- The Jērcēni boulder — one of the largest boulders in Latvia, roughly 7.1 × 6.9 metres.
- Jaunjērcēni park — an 8-hectare dendrological planting, good for a walk among trees from around the world.
The Camino de Santiago passes through Jērcēni
Latvia's stretch of the Camino, from Valka to Rīga, leads straight through the Jērcēni area — the Turna–Strenči stage (34 km) is one of the most beautiful and demanding on the route. Pilgrims often stop at Ausmas along the way, and a pilgrim-passport stamp is available at the Strenči church.
Sedas bog
The bog trails offer two routes — 4.5 km and 4.1 km — with birdwatching towers; on autumn mornings, flocks of cranes often rise over the bog. In summer you can rent a boat or SUP board and paddle out onto the bog lake; in winter, fish through the ice.
Jērcēnmuiža manor
The pink manor house is the village's landmark — the park around it hosts midsummer bonfires and songs from the folklore group “Mežābele.” The traditions here aren't staged for visitors — they simply continue, as they always have.
